On the web right now you can get your fill of music from any number of paid services, like Amazon and iTunes, for pay per downloads. You can also get the unlimited variety from Rhapsody and Napster but you pay a monthly subscription and don’t own your music. There is an emerging market of free play music on the web. Right now at the top of the list, Pandora seems to be the leader, but it’s strength is in music discovery rather than song selection. What if you could get just about any song legally streamed to to your computer. Now you can.Enter Grooveshark.com. The web site that allows you to stream just about any song for free straight to your computer, legally. Here is the breakdown on this ad supported music service.
- The user interface is pretty simple to use and resembles the basic of players with a column for custom playlists, navigation on the site, and a search bar. The main body of the player displays all the songs searched. The bottom contains a slider that displays each song played with it’s album art. Then on the right side a narrow column displays ads. (they can be removed for $3 bucks a month).
- You can go to the site and start using it right away, no account creation is needed, but should you choose to create a login, you can create, save, and share playlists. Creating an account is free. A paid account is available but not needed.
- Using the service is easy, right away a giant search field is offered to you, enter in an artist, a song, or even genre, and it will populate songs and then just click to play.
This site has so much content I found myself addicted to looking through hundreds of song to find b-sides, remixes, and check out albums I never felt like dropping some coin on. Grooveshark.com is the best in free music. I only wish I found it first, but I owe this one to my friend, Trent Hensley.
